It was an amazing surprise to be nominated for an award the second time running, and I am very grateful to those of my colleagues who put me forward for the broadcasting category. But I do realise - without wishing to be either pompous or self-promoting - that with most JJA members living in the USA, and despite the very best reach of the BBC World service or website, the vast majority of those qualified to vote won't have the least idea how one of my program(me)s sounds. Since the end of Jazzmatazz last week after 6 years, Im not audible on the web on a weekly basis. So here are some hints for anyone who might want to find out more.
My next BBC Radio 3 Jazz File series about John Dankworth and Cleo Laine starts on Saturday 19 April at 6pm UK time for four weeks.
There are also archive editions one of two fairly complete shows in different corners of the web. Two programs about US jazz education can be found at
http://www.berklee.edu/news/in_the_news/jazzmatazz.html
If you go to
www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/programmes/jaz.shtml
and scroll right down to the bottom, in the best of Jazzmatazz box you can call up programmes on: Wynton Marsalis, the story of Rhino records, the Montreal Jazz Festival 2001, and Abdullah Ibrahim. Theres also a Diana Krall interview on:
www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazz/krallint.shtml
The same Radio 3 website has my video diary about Central Avenue in LA (click on the Central Avenue box in the Jazz File section). But sadly, music copyright issues prevent most of my major series, on topics like John Coltranes Ascension, on the AACM and on Ornette at 70 from being available on the web. I hope this is helpful. _________________ Alyn Shipton |
