Joe Derise 1 of 6

This gent is my favorite male jazz singer after Pops -- hear what he does with "Come Love" and "Mountain Greenery," both on Joe Derise -- The Complete Bethlehem Collection. He swings without Sinatra's sweep, but with all of the urbanity and a little more down-to-earthness than Fred Astaire. He's not a bluesman, but he's a city guy, out of the '40s and '50s. He's not mentioned in the New Grove, the All Music Guide edition I own, or Feather. Too bad. After Dorsey, I gather he worked mostly in cabaret settings. He repays a hearing.
