Vernon and Benny were the best. Even when I had no money, they would let me in to hear the music and then pay them later. The Left Bank Jazz Society was where I heard Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Rassan Roland Kirk, Don Ellis and so many others. Beginning in 1965 at the Madison Club, it was my refuge on Sunday afternoons. Without Vernon and Benny and the LBJS, my life would not have been fulfilled.
