Tony was a very special guy, a super drummer and a sincerely nice person. I had the pleasure of booking him a few times for the New Jewrsey Jazz Society Jazzfest, and his band always brought down the house. Through the last several difficult years, I occasionally spoke with Tony on the phone, and was always taken by the wonderful spirit that he posessed in the face of his extreme health problems. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis several years ago, but did not let that hold him back. He told me that he first had symptoms while heading out to Long Island to play during a symposium about Frank Sinatra at Hofstra University, which led him,to seek medical asistance, resulting in the diagnosis of his MS. All of us who knew Tony, and dug his music will sorely miss him.
