Al Grey 1 of 7

Al was fun even when solemn. Shocked to hear a friend had to miss a gig due to a nasty gardening injury, Al exclaimed, 'he shouldn't be doing that! He's a musician!' He loved Buddy Tate, their duo recorded by BBC radio was broadcast at 3am, Buddy's slow 'Blue Creek' feature was cut into by a storm warning! He'd another great touring/studio duo with Tony Coe. His self-parody when not feeling on great form avoided dullness and could restore inspiration. I'll not forget the dance he did to tune up any drummer: a teacher, a conductor! Pure music!
