Buzzy Drootin 1 of 1

Buzzy Drootin was the last survivor of the three great drummers who worked at Eddie Condon's club in the 1950's: George Wettling and Cliff Leeman being the other two. An immigrant from Russia, Buzzy somehow picked up on dixieland jazz and - had he arrived on the scene a few years earlier - would have become one of the greats. He had an integrated "flat" sound on the drums that allowed him to play dixieland, swing and bebop with equal facility. Billie Holiday, apparently, named him as her favourite drummer. But he will be best remembered as part of the legendary Condon/ Davison /Cutshall crowd: Condon had strong views on drummers and Buzzy was one of the few who met with his approval.
