I enjoy Mark Gridley's Jazz Styles, and have used it as the most accessible analytic overview for my class THe Arts: Jazz at New York University since the mid '80s. You might want to look around for early editions of his book, which has been pared down of some details and significant innovators. On the other hand, he's expanded his consideration of '80s-present jazz in recent versions. As Jazzhouse notes, this is a handy volume to have around. . .
