The nominees<br \/>\nand other information about the 2013 JJA Jazz Awards may be viewed at<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jjajazzawards.com\">www.JJAJazzAwards.com<\/a>.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nBesides the Jazz Awards nominees, the JJA announced the names of 26 &#8220;Jazz<br \/>\nHeroes&#8221; \u2013 who it describes as &#8220;advocates, altruists, activists, aiders and<br \/>\nabettors of jazz&#8221; \u2013 nominated by JJA members and unaffiliated colleagues in 24<br \/>\nU.S. cities and Ottawa, Canada. Photos and bios of the Jazz Heroes are on view<br \/>\nhere: http:\/\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jjajazzawards.org\/p\/jazz-heroes-2013.html\">www.jjajazzawards.org\/p\/jazz-heroes-2013.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nominees for Lifetime Achievement in Jazz are pianist\/composers Muhal Richard<br \/>\nAbrams, McCoy Tyner and Randy Weston as well as saxophonist\/composer Wayne<br \/>\nShorter (also nominated for Best Small Ensemble and Soprano Saxophonist of the<br \/>\nYear. Musicians nominated in several categories include arranger and orchestra<br \/>\nleader Ryan Truesdell, trumpeter\/composer Wadada Leo Smith, and clarinetist<br \/>\nAnat Cohen.<\/p>\n<p>The JJA Jazz Awards are the only honors presented by professional jazz media-<br \/>\nmakers for both musicianship and journalistic activities (including Best<br \/>\nPublication, Best Website, Best Book of the Year, and Photo of the Year).<br \/>\nNominees for Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Journalism are multi-taskers Willard<br \/>\nJenkins, W. Royal Stokes and Ted Panken.<\/p>\n<p>The JJA, with more than 300 members (writers, photographers, broadcasters and<br \/>\nnew media professionals as well as supporters, jazz industry and community<br \/>\nsponsors, mostly in North America but also in South America, Europe, Asia and<br \/>\nNew Zealand) promotes all media activities about all styles or genres of jazz.<br \/>\nIts initiatives currently include JazzApril, http:\/\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.JazzApril.com\">www.JazzApril.com<\/a>, a<br \/>\nbroadly based campaign in support of local jazz activities during the<br \/>\nSmithsonian Institution-driven Jazz Appreciation Month, culminating in UNESCO&#8217;s<br \/>\ndeclared International Jazz Day, April 30.<\/p>\n<p>Winners in the 28 categories of 2013 Jazz Awards pertaining to musicianship<br \/>\nwill be announced on May 1. Winners of the Jazz Awards for media will be<br \/>\nannounced at a JJA Jazz Awards party in New York City at the Blue Note Jazz<br \/>\nClub, a ticketed event, on June 19.
