Irvine

Weldon Irvine enjoyed considerable success in a jazz-funk mode in the 1970s, and later collaborated with rap and hip hop artists. He wrote lyrics to many songs, including Donny Hathaway's major hit, 'Young, Gifted and Black', and also wrote for musicals. His records were frequently sampled by contemporary artists, including A Tribe Called Quest and Ice Cube. Irvine is reported to have shot himself in front of an office block in Uniondale, NY.
