Daphne Hellman, harpistCopyright © 2002
Jazz harpist Daphne Hellman (Daphne Van Beuren Bayne) was a famously eccentric heiress and society beauty (likened to Katherine Hepburn in appearance, and once described by Time as being "as curvesome as a treble clef") who devoted herself to her music.
She led her trio, Hellman's Angels, at the Village Gate in New York every Tuesday for 30 years when she was in town. She performed at many jazz clubs, and often played in the streets and in New York subway stations.
