Roy Kral, singer and half of famous duoCopyright © 2002
Roy Joseph Kral formed one half of the longest-running singing team in jazz. Jackie Cain and Roy Kral began singing together in 1946 (they were married in 1949) and continued to work together until very recently, when Kral's deteriorating health obliged them to reduce their work schedule. They last performed in June.
Kral was a good painist as well as a fine singer, and composed and arranged a great deal of amterial for the duo. He formed his own band as a teenager, and worked with Jackie Cain in saxophonist Charlie Ventura's band in the late 1940s. The success of their partnership in that setting encouraged them to launch what became a very successful duo.
