Paul 'Hucklebuck' Williams gained national fame in the late 1940s with his jump-style band, notably through his very successful recording The Huckle Buck (1948). He was featured mainly on baritone saxophone on these recordings (mostly for Savoy), but also played alto. His band later became the house band on the television series Showtime at the Apollo.
He directed the band of soul singer James Brown in the early 1960s, but later gave up music for a time. He opened a booking agency in New York in 1968.
