Brooks Stella Brooks was a singer who was once known as the white Billie Holiday. She was a friend of both Holiday and playwright Tennessee Williams, who wrote about her in his Memoirs.
She was brought up in an orphanage in San Francisco. She moved to New York in the 1930s, and had a modest career as a singer with a distinctive semi-spoken style.
She gave up singing and returned to San Francisco in 1962.
