Dear JJA members,

Two items of note:

1} the JJA is throwing a reception to present Congressman John Conyers Jr.
(D-Michigan) with his JJA Discretionary Award during the Congressional Black
Caucus meeting in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, Sept. 24. Pfizer drug company,
one of our main sponsors at the Jazz Awards, is supporting this party, which
takes place at 6 p.m. at D.C.'s New Convention Center -- and the JJA has 15
tickets to this event, which are being made available to the first members who
request them from Suzan Jenkins (muzikmusette at aol.com). DO NOT ASSUME YOU CAN
e-mail her NOW!!! Following the reception, at 7 p.m., Rep. Conyers is
moderating a Jazz Forum which will take up issues of health care and health insurance
for jazz musicians and other independent contractors (like freelance jazz
journalists). A representative from the New Orleans Musicians Clinic will be on
the panel, as will JJA VP Willard Jenkins, and Elvin and Hank Jones. This forum
is free, and ALL members of the public who are interested may attend.
Following it, at 8:30, Elvin and Hank Jones will perform in Ballroom C of the
Convention Center -- this concert is also free, and open to the public.

2} The first JAZZ MATTERS meeting of the fall is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on
WEDNESDAY, Sept. 24, at the New School Jazz and Contemporary Music
performance space, 55 W. 13th St., 5th floor. Rather than a panel discussion, this will
be a rare JJA MEMBERSHIP MEETING. We have a lot to discuss: new JJA corporate
and not-for-profit status, new bylaws, upcoming programs for the IAJE
conference in NYC in January 04, and new business are all on the agenda. Please come
if you can.

Questions? Just ask --
