The Jazz Journalists Association, in cooperation with the New England Jazz
Alliance, will hold a free panel discussion on "Jazz in New England" as part of
the Tanglewood (MA) Jazz Festival at Seranak House, just west of Tanglewood,
on Saturday, Sept 4, 5:00-6:15 pm. This program is the first at Tanglewood by
the JJA.
Panelists will include Brian Barlow, General Manager of WICN Radio in
Worcester, Massachusetts; Carol Sloane, jazz vocalist, writer, High Note recording
artist, broadcaster and JJA member; Ed Bride, Western Massachusetts Director,
New England Jazz Alliance; and Benjamin Barber, stepson of Stephanie Barber,
founder of the Music Inn in Lenox, Massachusetts, and proprietress from 1956-61.
Jon Hammond of WRIU Radio in Rhode Island will moderate.
The focus will be on jazz in New England's cultural history from the early
days of the Music Inn to the establishment of the Lenox School of Jazz by
Gunther Schuller, John Lewis et a. at Tanglewood to today's Northeastern U.S.
marketplace and audience. Barlow will address his role as NPR broadcaster in Central
Massachusetts; Sloane will offer her insights as a New England broadcaster
(WGBH, WICN), Down Beat contributor, and jazz vocalist from New England.
The New England Jazz Alliance will present a special "Unsung Hero" Award the
family of Stephanie Barber in commemoration of her enduring commitment to and
support of the performers and the music of jazz. The panel itself will be
videotaped for a documentary on the Music Inn currently in production.
