Dear fellow writers,
I've been alerted that some of our articles originally published by Down Beat
that appeared on the free database Findarticles.com (without our permission
or recompense) are being removed. This is the time to find out what you've got
on Findarticles.com -- it has a search function by author's name -- so that
you will know whether your copyright has been infringed since 1992. If the JJA
member lawyer goes to court over this, he can claim $s owed ffor all that time,
not just if the material remains posted. And of course if your work is NOT
up, nobody gets to find it and read it.
ALSO: Tickets are moving fast for the Jazz Awards -- if you intend to attend,
please make your reservations at JazzJournalistsAwards.com right NOW. Members
are being asked for $40 per ticket (up to 5 tickets) because this is a
benefit for the Jazz Foundation's Musicians Emergency Fund (currently aiding the
great, too-unsung and ailing tenor saxist John Stubblefield, among others) and
the JJA, which has plans to produce a one-day Jazz Journalists Intensive with
our renowned senior members and most active younger pros leading hands-on
workshops, perhaps as soon as next fall. The success of the Jazz Awards will also
help the JJA jumpstart programming in chapters beyond NYC.
A ticket to the Jazz Awards gives you a chance to: take the hard hat tour of
the new Jazz at Lincoln Center facility (see Jazzhouse for reservation
informatin); be in the group photo (come by 3:45 -- seats except for nominees and
sponsors are first come, first seated anyway) taken by Gene Martin; chug
free-flowing beer and wine and sodas; wolf a 3-course chicken dinner; dig sounds by Renee
Cruz's new School Band, the Judy Bady Quartet, Doug Wamble solo, Dewey
Redman's trio, Duane Eubank's quintet and diverse surprise guests; listen to
legendary serio-comic Dick Gregory (everybody from Richard Pryor to Chris Rock to
Lewis Black is in his debt); mix it up with confirmed attendees Rudy Van Gelder,
Les Paul, newscaster Roz Abrams, critic Gary Giddins, editors David Adler
(Jazz Notes), Alan Light (Tracks), Pete Gershon (Signal2Noise), Eric Neymeyer
(JazzImprov), Jason Koransky (Down Beat), Paul Blair (Hot House), Laurence
Donough-Greene (AllAboutJazz-NY), Frank J. Oteri (New Music Box), IAJE president Bill
McFarlin, Jazz Times publisher Glenn Sabin, the staffs of WBGO, BETJazz,
Jazzmobile, AllAboutJazz.com, Jazzcorner, Palmetto and Blue Note Records, plus
dozens of musician and journalist nominees and friends from far and wide, and
take home a treasure-stuffed (copies of Jazz Improv, JJA pens, E-Trade t-shirts,
etc.) goodie bag. No drum solos by amateurs. If you want to buy tickets by
check, make it out to the JJA and send it to Arnold Jay Smith, 436 State St.,
Brooklyn NY 11217.
more soon.
