Greetings, JJA members --
2 things the organization is doing at the Newport Jazz Festival --
a "Jazz Matters" panel discussion on "World's Greatest Jazz Fests," moderated
by Erick Jackson longtime host of "Eric in the Evening" on WGBH-FM (Boston)
on Friday, August 12 (suggested donation $5.00; cash bar from 2:30 p.m., panel
3 - 5) at Sardella's Italian Restaurant, 30 Memorial Boulevard W., Newport, RI
(this is right around the corner from the Casino at the Tennis Hall of Fame,
where Eartha Kitt is kicking off the festival later in Friday evening).
Confirmed panelists include Joe Lovano, world-renown saxophonist; Bob Blumenthal,
the JJA's 2005 Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Journalism award winner; Gwen
Cavlier of Hot House magazine; photojournalist Ken Frankling of Providence RI; Fred
Taylor, artistic director of the Tanglewood Jazz Festival and entertainment
director of Scullers in Boston, and Steve Bianchi of 99.3 FM WSJZ- Newport. Jon
Hammond is producing this event for the JJA, and everyone who shows up at
Sardella's with a fest story to tell will be welcome to participate.
Also at Newport, the JJA collaborates with Dave Dittman, publisher of Hot
House, on the Second Annual International Newport Jazz Party, after the Jazz
Festival music (starting around 7 p.m.) on Saturday, August 13. Journalists,
musicians, Newport dignitaries and friends are invited to this social gathering/jam
session in nearby Middletown, RI. Copious refreshments will be served. 44

In addition, we have "Jazz Matters" coming up at the Chicago Jazz Festival
("Legacy of King Oliver," moderated/produced by Art Lange, at the Chicago
Cultural Center, Wed. Aug. 31 5-6:30 pm, before the Chicago Jazz Festival's kickoff
Jazz Club Tour; panelists include legendary saxophonist Franz Jackson (age 92
-- he may have heard Oliver live!), Chicago trumpet favorite Orbert Davis,
historian Dick Wang (U of Illinois Chicago Circle Campus), and Delmark
Records/Jazz Record Mart principle Bob Koester; (the JJA will hold its annual Sunday
morning brunch, details TBA)
and at Tanglewood Jazz Festival, in Massachusett's Berkshires, from 1 p.m. -
3 p.m. Saturday, September 2, at Seranak, the former Koussevitsky estate on
the Tanglewood Music Center grounds, the topic is "Jazz and Pop -- The Big Cross
Over," with Carol Cutting of WEIB Radio, Northampton MA moderating a panel
comprising pianist-composer Donal Fox, vibraphonist Matthias Lupri, saxophonist
Walter Beasley, singer Nora York and JJA member Tom Reney of WFCR-FM.
