Hi JJA members --
please, if you're in the NYC area, attend the next JJA Jazz Matters panel,
"The Art of the Interview," on Wednesday, March 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the New
School Jazz performance space, 5th floor 55 W. 13th.
We're going to take up the complexities of interviewing from the perspectives
of broadcaster Sheila Anderson (Saturday night host on WBGO-FM, author of The
Quotable Musician: From Bach to Tupac (Allworth Press), published 3/03 and
How to Grow As A Musician: What All Musicians Must Know to Succeed (Allworth
Press) to be published July 2005); writer-broadcaster Ted Panken (Down Beat,
Jazziz, New York Daily News, WKCR), photographer Lourdes Delgado (pursuing her
insightful portrait project Jazz In New York: A Community of Visions now
including some 250 images), and videographer Monk Rowe (director since 1995 of the
Hamilton College Jazz Archive, for which he has conducted more than 250 video
interviews with jazz notables). To give us the interviewee's point of view, the
inimitable Butch Morris, internationally known for his unique conductions
(which last month celebrated 20 years of development) will participate, too.
I will moderate and the Jazz Matters will be recorded and made available to
JJA members on CDR for a low cost covering duplication and handling, but the
event itself is, as usual, free to those who show up. Hope to see you there.
Howard
