JOURNALISTS & MUSICIANS: COMMON CAUSE, SEPARATE PERSPECTIVES
WHERE: NEW SCHOOL FOR JAZZ STUDIES AND CONTEMPORARY MUSIC, 55 West 13th
Street, 5th Floor, in Manhattan
WHEN: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
PANELISTS: Ben Allison,bassist/composer; Larry Blumenfeld, editor-at-large
for Jazziz Magazine; Claire Daly, saxophonist; Andrey Henkin,
co-founder/editor of AllAboutJazz-New York; Bobby Sanabria,
drummer/percussionist/composer/arranger/recording artist/educator; Zan Stewart, staff writer at the Newark
Star-Ledger. Lois Gilbert, producer of the event and director of jazzcorner.com,
will serve as moderator.
TOPICS: Raising the rapport between journalists and musicians with an
exploration of the commonality and differences between journalists and musicians in
jazz; what journalists want from artists; what musicians can expect from
journalists; why the two groups often experience frustration; and how they can
initiate and sustain dialogue. The panel also will explore the impact of
technological advances such as musician-produced podcasts and critics’ blogs.
