From jazzmandel at earthlink.net Tue Jun 9 09:04:48 2009 From: jazzmandel at earthlink.net (howard Mandel) Date: Tue, 9 Jun 2009 09:04:48 -0400 Subject: [jja-announce] Jazz Awards tickets! going fast! Message-ID: <292EB81F-4F23-4E17-BEC8-27282EDC4222@earthlink.net> Hi JJA members -- The JJA's 13th annual Jazz Awards is next week -- Tuesday, June 16, 3 to 6 pm at the Jazz Standard in NYC -- and some tickets for the barbeque-cocktail party are still available. We're having music by Charles Tolliver's Big Band, Jane Bunnett's Spirits of Havana, Carol Sudhalter with Daryl Sherman, Marian Petrescu and Andres Obert and the Matt Miller Trio, and many nominees will be in attendance -- so this will be a great gathering, and I hope you'll attend to show the celebrate the strength of our organization and renew ties with people throughout the jazz community. Awards will be presented by the JJA members in attendance -- another reason you should reserve now, so I can slip you in for a stage appearance if possible (first come first served on that). Tickets for JJA members this year are $60, discounted from $100 for non-affiliated purchasers -- the funds cover the cost of the food, drink, musical entertainment, Awards manufacture, program book printing, party-favors bags and, if there's anything left over, will help keep the JJA up-and-running throughout the coming year. Finalist nominees are free, and like JJA members may bring a guest for $60, too. Please go to www.JazzJournalists.org to purchase tickets via secure server -- contact me if you have questions or concerns -- and I hope to see you there. best Howard Howard Mandel jazzmandel at earthlink.net phone 212 533 9495 mobile 212 533 4952 see my blog: www.HowardMandel.com www.ArtsJournal.com/jazzbeyondjazz From adlange at comcast.net Fri Jun 12 17:04:27 2009 From: adlange at comcast.net (Art Lange) Date: Fri, 12 Jun 2009 16:04:27 -0500 Subject: [jja-announce] JJA Meeting Postponed Message-ID: <8008E1F408E1470C9D33505F9411788C@langehome> Dear JJA Members: Over the past couple of weeks I've been attempting to organize a Members Meeting in conjunction with the JJA Awards next Tuesday. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that the logistical details proved too difficult to manage in such a short time. So, in consultation with Howard, we've decided to postpone the Meeting and replace it with an online interactive discussion in late July or early August. We hope this will allow a greater amount of input from the membership, especially those who would not have been coming to New York for the Awards. We still feel that in order to secure the JJA's future we need to address several crucial issues - among them, the role of the organization, identifying and resolving budgetary concerns, increasing membership activity, sharing the work burden, and confirming a smooth transition of leadership when that is necessary. The JJA is, and always should be, a work in progress, reflecting the changing concerns of its members. Thanks to our president and board members, we have been on a steady course, but a periodic examination of our concerns, our goals, and our commitment can only help to strengthen our organization over time. So look for an announcement about our online discussion in a few weeks. In the meantime, have a nice summer - and hope to see you at the JJA Awards on June 16. Sincerely, Art Lange From jazzmandel at earthlink.net Mon Jun 15 09:46:58 2009 From: jazzmandel at earthlink.net (howard Mandel) Date: Mon, 15 Jun 2009 09:46:58 -0400 Subject: [jja-announce] pre-Jazz Awards Message-ID: <57E22F52-5E05-4C8A-B02B-E77BCFF98D6E@earthlink.net> Hi JJA members -- Tomorrow the JJA will present our 13th annual Jazz Awards, celebrating excellence in jazz music, presentation and documentation, with a cocktail barbeque at the Jazz Standard from 3 to 6 pm. Many JJA members are attending as presenters (hey, presenters -- look sharp! Let's put on a show of elegance, sophistication, charm, charisma!), many musicians are attending as hopeful nominees, sponsors and supporters will be there -- the music will be great and it's going to be fun. As we have had limited national coverage for the Jazz Awards during our 13 year run, I want to ask you to consider covering the Awards in some way in your own outlets. The winners of the Awards will be posted at JazzJournalists.org by 6 pm Tuesday night, and at Jazzhouse.org too. DL Media will also be sending out news of the winners, as will JazzPromo Services. I am available for interviews or to put you in touch with other JJA members involved in the Awards -- ballot chair Chris Kelsey, for instance -- if you want quotes for your stories. Photos are more of a problem, but Enid Farber (farberfoto at aol.com) will post at least one for downloading; we're trying to organize a second photographer right now. Thanks to all of you for voting, and for general support of this JJA initiative. The JJA is in good financial health due to the Awards, although we are in serious need of members' participation in many other areas to keep the organization thriving. We have several interesting plans on the drawing boards, including stronger link with the Jazz Foundation of America, intentions to get members Flip video cameras and some instruction so as to create web-ready jazz journalism, and a major conference on jazz journalism next January in New York. We will continue to try to improve our online presence through our websites and with Jazz Notes. We may need a new membership secretary -- if you are interested in this position, please send me a note at jazzmandel at earthlink.net. And we intend to hold an online discussion in July about all these issues and more related to the JJA's future. The Jazz Awards have become a significant reflection of who's doing the best work in jazz now. No poll is perfect and all hierarchies of "best" are open to criticism -- and that's as it should be. But we can be proud of having put on these Awards, especially of having identified movers and shakers with the A Team awards, and we ought to trumpet them. If you have any questions or concerns, please get back to me. If you can, please cover the Jazz Awards the ways you think best. yours, Howard Howard Mandel jazzmandel at earthlink.net phone 212 533 9495 mobile 212 533 4952 see my blog: www.HowardMandel.com www.ArtsJournal.com/jazzbeyondjazz From david at adlermusic.com Mon Jun 15 11:46:46 2009 From: david at adlermusic.com (David R.
