This is unpaid work, can be well- organized and split up, would be very much appreciated by the JJA. Contact me if you're interested. Two: The JJA was turned down for funding meant to support a proposed conference on Jazz Journalism in Transition, next January in NYC. We are continuing to pursue other options, including restaging the date and place. Three: The JJA needs representatives to attend the USC Annenberg School for Communications National Summit for Arts Journalism, 8:30 am - 1 pm, Friday, October 2, Los Angeles; for more info on the summit go to www.najp.org and if interested/available, please contact me. thanks, Howard Howard Mandel jazzmandel at earthlink.net phone 212 533 9495 mobile 212 533 4952 see my blog: www.HowardMandel.com www.ArtsJournal.com/jazzbeyondjazz From jazzmandel at earthlink.net Thu Sep 10 20:37:40 2009 From: jazzmandel at earthlink.net (howard Mandel) Date: Thu, 10 Sep 2009 20:37:40 -0400 Subject: [jja-announce] 4th thing: JJA mentoring program Message-ID: <6CA97183-8F05-43A2-96F7-EA5C1EDD9007@earthlink.net> Dear Members -- This is a reminder that Thursday, Sept 17 -- at the New School Performance Space, 55 W. 13th St in Manhattan -- Yvonne Ervin, JJA Vice-President, will convene an information meeting of potential mentors from the JJA for The Urban Assembly?s School for Music and Art?s 11th and 12th graders interested in writing about music. We had a good response to the mentoring program but we just didn't have the critical mass for this meeting. Again, we're organizing a year-long mentoring program for the Urban Assembly School for Music and Art's 11th and 12th graders interested in writing about music. Contact will be, primarily, via email with gatherings of all the mentors and mentees at an evening music event in November, January (around the JJA conference), March and June. The mentees will write reviews with the help of their mentors and we'll have a special section on jazzhouse.org to post their work. We have a curriculum to guide your interaction with the mentees via email. We're checking to see if they would also like some photography mentors. The students are predominately (96%) African American and Hispanic and come from the poorest neighborhoods in NYC. But 90% of them get accepted into college. Most of them just need a caring person in a profession that interests them to give them that push into college toward a brighter future for them and their families. Our goal is to break the cycle of poverty in NYC. Please let me know if you're interested.
