There was an address mistake in the ballot sent out previously as an attachment to a jja-announce email; we left an 's' off the return address. So if you have sent in your nominations already to the address -- jazzawardsnom at jazzjournalists.org it probably bounced back to you -- we didn't get it. Please send completed ballots to: JazzAwardsNoms at jazzjournalists.org. Those who have made nominations can get a a digital badge to put on your own website or blog that shows you're a nominator. Write to me, President at JazzJournalists.org for that, please. If you want to see it, check out my blog at www.artsjournal.com/jazzbeyondjazz. Please note that *only paid-up full professional members of the JJA can nominate or vote in the JJA Jazz Awards*. So ple*ase please please renew your dues and nominate*. You can renew dues (still only $75 per year) by going to: http://www.jazzhouse.org/noff/index.php?page_id=30 See our new Jazz Awards website -- go to www.jjajazzawards.org . If you want to post comments on this website about the Jazz Awards, send your comments for posting to me. If you have not paid dues in more than a year, all past-dues are forgiven but pay up now! We need you as members, and we think you need the JJA as an active organization within the greater jazz community keeping pressure on organizations and companies to recognize the importance, value, significance of jazz journalists in the overall jazz ecology. This lobbying is working -- as upcoming reports on the January jazz journalism conference during NEA Jazz Masters ceremonies and the APAP convention will detail. Please nominate! The 14th annual Jazz Awards is going to be bigger, better, and raise the profile of excellence of everyone involved. thanks and best to all -- Pres Howard From president at jazzjournalists.org Sun Mar 7 13:27:05 2010 From: president at jazzjournalists.org (JJA, President) Date: Sun, 7 Mar 2010 13:27:05 -0500 Subject: [jja-announce] this week's Jazz Matters Message-ID: <8446a2bf1003071027s4edf74h2a7323a7c427ecfe@mail.gmail.com> Dear members -- the JJA is resuming its occasional "Jazz Matters" programs at the New School Jazz and Contemporary Music program's New York City performance space on Tuesday, March 9 at 6 pm, with young scholars presenting their masters' thesis work on Jack Teagarden, Sonny Sharrock and Django Reinhardt. Admission is free. Alex Rodriguez, Jared Negely and Paul Brady are students in Lewis Porter's Jazz History and Research masters degree program at Rutgers University -- all three attended the JJA's January conference meetings. Older JJA members spoke of wanting to learn what these younger scholars see and hear in the musicians they're concentrating on, and also wanting to understand how younger people think about jazz scholarship programs. David Adler is moderating the presentations and discussion, which will be audio captured and videotaped. Information on posting of that documentation will follow (eventually). Please come to the meeting -- 6 pm Tuesday March 9, New School 5th floor performance space, 55 W. 13th St. NYC, if you can. ALSO: nominations for the 2010 Jazz Awards are still being accepted -- all nominations are due by next Monday, March 15. Please visit Jazzhouse.org for a ballot, if you haven't started yours yet, and send completed ballots to JazzAwardsNoms at jazzjournalists.org. When you have made you nominations, contact me (president at jazzjournalists.org) for a digital button you can put on your website announcing that you nominate for the JJA Jazz Awards. It's a good online promotional doodad. See the new JJA website about the Awards -- http://www.jjajazzawards.org/Don't be fooled by the organization that is promoting www.JazzAwards.com -- we are trying to find out who's behind that (but I suspect it's the group that promoted itself as producing jazz awards in LA last year, which simply didn't occur). Yes, you have to be a member in good standing of the JJA in order to nominate OR vote in the 2010 Jazz Awards. If you are facing financial hardship that prohibits the $75 dues at this time, please contact me directly to enquire about negotiating a dues deferment. However, the JJA has not raised its dues in more than 10 years -- and our core membership believes that $75 is a low fee for the news and information, networking opportunities, Jazz Awards participation, behind-the-scenes negotiating and up-front workshop training the JJA has done and plans to kick up a notch or two. Good things are in the works for the JJA, if we can ride out the economic downturn and shift of media to online formats. Please stay with us! Renew your membership by using your charge card at: http://www.jazzhouse.org/noff/index.php?page_id=30 or send a check made out to the Jazz Journalists Association to: Gene Marlow, 235 Adams St., Apt. 7A, Brooklyn NY 11201. thanks, Howard Mandel From john at johnabbottphoto.com Wed Mar 10 22:31:53 2010 From: john at johnabbottphoto.com (John Abbott) Date: Wed, 10 Mar 2010 22:31:53 -0500 Subject: [jja-announce] Jazz Photograph of the Year - Please Enter!
