The Tanglewood Jazz Festival is very pleased to welcome the Jazz Journalists Association as part of its programming for the first time this year.

The JJA, in cooperation with the New England Jazz Alliance, will present a discussion on "Jazz in New England" at Seranak House, just west of Tanglewood, on Saturday, Sept 4, 5:00-6:15 pm. Panelists will include Brian Barlow, General Manager of WICN Radio in Worcester, Massachusetts; Carol Sloane, jazz vocalist, writer, and High Note recording artist; Ed Bride, Western Massachusetts Director, New England Jazz Alliance; and Benjamin Barber, stepson of Stephanie Barber, founder of the Music Inn in Lenox, Massachusetts, and proprietress from 1956-61. Jon Hammond of WRIU Radio in Rhode Island will moderate.

The panel will discuss the significance of jazz in New England cultural history from the early days of the Music Inn, with historians Ed Bride and Ben Barber, to today's marketplace and audience with Brian Barlow and Carol Sloane, Barlow will address his role as NPR broadcaster in Central Massachusetts and his station's success in producing jazz concerts and in developing a growing audience. Sloane will offer her insights as a New England broadcaster (WGBH, WICN), Downbeat writer, and jazz vocalist growing up and performing in New England.

A special "Unsung Hero" Award will be presented by the New England Jazz Alliance to the family of Stephanie Barber in commemoration of her enduring commitment to and support of the performers and the music of jazz. The panel presentation will be videotaped for a documentary on the Music Inn currently in production.
