Jazz Notes
By Ron Scott
The term jazz supper club . . . doesnt come close to describing
the Creole Restaurant & Jazz Supper Club.
The upscale restaurant/club boasts a friendly, casual atmosphere,
tasty Creole cuisine and a mixed listing of jazz artists.
On Friday, [October 7th] as a prerequisite to the first anniversary celebration, featured artist Chico Freemans Quartet
with the explosive pianist Hilton Ruiz, who swings straight-ahead
jazz with bold Latin rhythms. Chico Freeman is always looking
for new avenues to explore as a multi-instrumentalist,
producer, composer and leader.
Spicy Creole entrees are served daily (closed Sundays),
with heavy helpings of live jazz Tuesday thru Saturday.
Its exposed brick wall covered with original artwork
by Curt Marherne.
His works of marching jazz bands are all titled
The New Orleans Second Line.
In jazz clubs talking during performances is frowned upon.
One can even be reprimanded for such behavior.
However, at Creole you will hear chit chat.
Even with all the chatter everyone seems
quite content. Its a joyous affair.
Kevin Walters, the owner, stated,
We are passionate about the food, music and
the Creole culture. We want to create the
old-fashioned Supper club.
Appeared in October 6 - 12, 2005, Amsterdam News
Creole Restaurant and Jazz Supper Clubs Ambience:
Creole menu is an amalgam of New Orleans and Harlem fare.
One night early, a celebration party of 16 enjoyed a private table while a talkative group of business singles spoke through the
mellow guitar, grand piano and drums playing both background standards and get your attention original jazz. - Dan Kassell
"New Orleans food is as delicious as the less criminal forms of sin."
