Gerald Majer's book, The Velvet Lounge: On Late Chicago Jazz, has just been 
published by Columbia University Press.  The book is a poet's take on Chicago 
music and its worlds from Gene Ammons and Andrew Hill to Roscoe Mitchell and Ed 
Wilkerson, Jr., weaving together historical anecdote, autobiographical 
narrative, and meditations on jazz expression and literary and philosophical themes. 
 The essays in the book appeared in literary journals including The Georgia 
Review, The Yale Review, Quarterly West, Shenandoah, and Brilliant Corners: A 
Journal of Jazz and Literature.    

In Chicago, Gerald will be reading and signing books at the Harold Washington 
Library on October 26th at 5:30 P.M, and at the Seminary Book Co-Op at the 
University of Chicago October 27th at 7:00 P.M.  

In NYC, he will be reading/signing at Labyrinth Books in NYC on November 17th 
at 7 P.M.  

He will be celebrating the book's launch with Lafayette Gilchrist and the New 
Volcanoes at Villa Julie College near Baltimore on December 1st at 7 P.M.
