daddy's shades wrapped around my eyes
like a winter wind.

on the stereo, it was summer;
a conspiracy of brass-driven beauty.

joyous punctuation to the voice
i wished was mine.

well, at least the sunglasses were close.

and if you looked carefully,
you could see quincy jones inciting the band-
there, near the closet.

eyes closed, i held the broom
the way they say he caressed countless raelettes,
and rocked like the amistad in crisp, northern waters.

its steinway dark captives free-
detirmined as the genius shouting "what'di say"
