Jazz Journalists Nominate 200 Musicians, Writers, Photographers, Broadcasters, New Media Professionals for Annual Awards; Dave Brubeck, Lionel Hampton, John Lewis, Cecil Taylor and Clark Terry nominees for "Lifetime Achievement," Dave Douglas, Dave Holland, Joe Lovano and Chucho Valdés for "Musician of the Year."
Winners to be Announced June 14, 2001, 4 - 7 p.m., Birdland, NYC.
The Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards 2001, the fifth annual presentation of honors to jazz musicians and their supporters by the organization representing 350 writers, broadcasters, photographers and new media professionals worldwide, will be held June 14, 4 to 7 p.m., at Birdland in New York City, in benefit of the Emergency Care Fund of the Jazz Foundation of America. Eminent actor Keith David, voice of Ken Burns' Jazz, will be master of ceremonies at the event, during which engraved statuettes will be presented to winners in 40 categories of achievement.
Dr. Billy Taylor -- noted jazz pianist, educator, advocate and broadcaster -- will be keynote speaker. Members of the Jazz Journalists Association and special guests will present the awards, determined by voting by JJA members based on nominations in 40 categories, which resulted in more than 200 finalists.
The Jazz Awards represent excellence and accomplishment in the year May 2000 to May 2001. The JJA for the first year has forged a collaboration with the Jazz Foundation of America, in hopes of promoting the JFA's fundraising activities through summer 2001, culminating in a Great Night In Harlem, a filmed all-star jazz concert, planned for September 24, 2001 at the Apollo Theater.
In previous years the Jazz Awards have been presented at Alice Tully Hall and South Street Seaport in affiliation with Knitmedia, and at the Knitting Factory. A full roster of Jazz Awards 2001 nominees is on-view at www.Jazzhouse.org, website of the Jazz Journalists Association.
The JJA will host members and Jazz Awards nominees at the Birdland event, which will include musical presentations and refreshments, and hopes to raise funds for the JFA's Emergency Care Fund by offering representatives of jazz industries, institutions and consumers tickets at the cost of $75.
